During the 94th Academy Awards live television broadcast on March 27, 2022, actor Will Smith, the then-nominee and eventual winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor, walked onstage and slapped comedian Chris Rock across the face as he presented the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Pinkett Smith sat next to her spouse, who has alopecia aerate (spot baldness). Smith came out of the audience, onto the stage, and struck Rock in the face after first laughing at the joke. Rock had already made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, comparing her appearance to Demi Moore in the film G.I. Jane.
Why did Will Smith slap Chris Rock?
Will then instructed Chris, who had just made a joke about Will’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, having a bald head, to keep her name out of his lips.
Shortly after the event, he burst into tears when giving an acceptance speech after receiving the Best Actor award. His mother has now described him as a people person, and she, too, was surprised when he chose violence to respond to Chris Rock.
Carolyn Smith, Will Smith’s mother, is the latest to respond to the recent Oscars scandal involving him and comic Chris Rock. When Ellen Smith, Will’s younger sister, was questioned about the event, she talked about how her brother had excelled in Hollywood despite a lot of pressure.
“Everyone, you know, has been bullied and mistreated in some manner,” she explained. And I completely understand. People say things like, “Oh, I wish I was in such and such shoes, and those are my ambitions and everything,” but you have no idea what it takes to get there. I’ve had chats with him, and it hurt my heart to hear the things he’s stated he had to go through to get to where he is.
