Shahid Kapoor’s starter upcoming movie Jersey is in legal trouble. A writer named Rupesh Jaiswal dragged the movie to the court. He has filed a copyright infringement suit against the producer of the film, Jersey and Shahid Kapoor before the Bombay High Court.
Jaiswal has sought a stay on the release of Jersey in his plea, which is going to hit the theaters on April 22 this year. Jaiswal told that he registered his script in 2007 under the title “The Wall” with the former Jersey Writers Association now called Screen Writers Association.
He said that both the Telugu and Hindi version of Jersey have plagiarized everything, the story, concept, and idea of the script. The Telugu version of the movie was released in the year 2019 and the Hindi remake of Jersey is set to release on April 22.
What more Rupesh Jaiswal says about the Jersey Copyright Claim?
Jaiswal’s script involved a cricketer giving up the sport in his early youth. He then picked it up again in his middle age. He was motivated by his desire to make his family proud of him, especially his son. The primarily underlying themes of his script also focused on familial love, determination, sport, and age-linked inhibitions.
Jaiswal stated that his script has been manipulated in such a way that it shouldn’t look to be plagiarized. But all the main points have been copied. The defendants have unjustly enriched themselves and have caused a massive economic loss to the plaintiff (Jaiswal).
The plea further stated, “The fact that a Telugu movie is now being adapted and remade in Hindi, itself shows that huge profits have already been made in 2019 when its Telugu version was released”.
Ramesh Jaiswal claimed that the defendants colluded with each other to cheat and deceive him for wrongful gain by obtaining the script from a third party so that they can avoid paying royalties.
Jaiswal stated that his rights have been violated under the copyright act. The defendants ought to cease and desist from any further propagation of the plagiarized versions of the film Jersey. The suit will be heard today by Justice Riyaz Chagla for interim relief of a stay on the movie’s release.
The respondents include producer Dil Raju, Brat Film through Aman Gill, Allu Aravind, Suryadevara Nagavamsi, and Shahid Kapoor. The release date of Jersey was recently postponed by a week. Earlier it was going to be released on April 14. To avoid a clash between two much-awaited South movies- KGF; Chapter 2 and Beast, its new release date was set to April 22.
